Chapter Six

As Elan flies into the air in her invisible form, I pull the hood of my cape over my head and keep my ears tuned, listening for the cries of war. Eventually, I hear them not too far away from where we landed in Midgard. We follow the screams to find a primal scene of people fighting with swords and archers lining the outskirts, shooting people with arrows.

Valkyries and angels of death are flying above the fighting field and landing in different places. There are many warriors to choose from, but each time a Valkyrie and an angel of death land next to the same soldier, a fight erupts.

A Valkyrie lands next to a soldier she wants and begins to reap his soul, but she is interrupted by an angel of death, and they clash swords over the warrior, who is approaching his final breaths. Pain shoots in my stomach. This warrior's pain can be taken from him in an instant, except he has to wait for the battle for his soul to be finalized, if he can hold out that long. It is a scene that is being replayed many times over the field, sometimes with the angel of death being the first to arrive at the soldier’s side.

I see no sign of Rota, Prima, or Mist. A small twinge of guilt pulls at my heart when I realize that Rota and Prima are probably still in the healing ward, recovering from my magic.

A puff of steam erupts in front of me. This is barbaric, Elan says. And I thought dragons were terrible. Do you really want to be part of this?

“Being barbaric is not what I have in mind. My goal is to prove wingless Valkyries are just as valuable to the cause of saving us from Ragnarök.”

There must be a better way to do it.

I shake my head then realize that she probably isn’t looking at me. “No. This is all Valkyries are bred for—to reap the souls of the brave warriors so they can fight and defend Asgard in the final battle.”

Okay. If that’s what you need to do, then let’s do it.

Elan flies in, grabs an angel of death by the shoulders, and flings him aside. His body pivots, and his eyes widen as he is tossed, back first, toward a tree.

“What are you doing?” I watch the angel as he spreads his wings to soften the blow and searches for the cause of his sudden change of direction.

I'm helping. She swoops down, aiming straight for the next angel of death in line, and picks him up by the shoulders and flings him beside the last one.

It surprises me that they don’t see me in the saddle before being snatched from their duty. The last one looked directly at me but still didn’t flinch when my body dived at him. He continued as if I didn't exist.

After flinging that angel of death aside, Elan flaps her mighty wings, and we lift into the sky and circle the battlefield before aiming for another angel.
